Collaborative Design
vs
Design by COmmittee
I feel a design is made stronger with a feedback loop. The challenging aspect is to ensure there are strong design principles guiding the discussions and an ability to discern between personal preference and true usability. Design principles can help guide discussions by helping prioritize user tasks and associated elements. Having design principles can help ensure not all feedback is taken as directives, but instead considered within a common context. Having a common context can help reduce the risk of Frankenstein design. Another consideration when trying to avoid Frankenstein design is that you need to prioritize features. Not all features have the same priority and an idea may need more maturation before the final implementation or integration. If you have an abundance of great ideas it is important to prioritize and ensure ideas that might not be ready yet are added to the backlog for future planning if they support the overall project/product strategy.
My favorite movie clip the makes a statement for how collaboration is part of the creative process.
