Inspiration comes in many forms and speaks to people in different ways. Everyone has unique perspectives, but I believe there is a universal visual language that is common. I enjoy discovering the common themes and elements whether found in nature or in another artist’s hand. Many of my paintings are inspired by photos I take of nature. Sometimes nature can present inspiration as a complete composition or an interesting texture, pattern or light effect. I find inspiration when closely observing another painter or other artist’s technique. I also find inspiration from other artistic works whether it is Tiffany stained glass or an ancient artifact.
I am fortunate to live in Washington DC as there are many museums to visit with new shows always available. I often visit museums and will share my experiences in a blog about an exhibit or a painting I saw.
My dual career also includes many years working user experience design in online education. Here are some of my favorite user experience inspirations.
Oil Paintings
In the Studio
Octopus
Here is one way I often start an oil painting. I start by toning the canvas and wiping out the lighter tones with a rag. This is a quick way to overcome the challenge and intimidation of the white canvas. Below you can see the original photograph which I took at the Chicago Aquarium.
Did you know an octopus has a central brain and eight smaller brains for each one of it’s arms ? The average life span of an octopus is 3- 5 years. Watch an amazing documentary that provides a dramatic storyline of one man’s relationship with an Octopus. The Octopus Teacher on Netflix. https://www.netflix.com/title/81045007
Morning Mist
Here is a recent painting captured from the start to finish. The inspiration for this painting was captured while kayaking in the early morning mist on the Potomac near Harper’s Ferry West Virginia. Many unique moments are fleeting that you can only enjoy momentarily. I was fortunate to capture this moment so that I can relive it again and share it with others.
BLUE TANG
Here is a painting in progress with photographic reference. After years of taking photos in public aquariums I took the next step to get closer to my subject matter and captured this unique grouping of Blue Tang in Belize while snorkeling on my honeymoon.
